Deft Family

In an industry dominated by Mulisha Wishers, Grenades, Guns, Blood and general  GnarGnar Maddog Sickuntness, Deft is certainly something fresh and a company that has set themselves apart from the rest of the pack.

A vision from the minds of four twenty odd year olds, Nate Adams, Logan Darien, Brian Foster and Nate Hawley, Deft brings some super fresh Hip Hop and Graffiti inspired designs to get your mits flossin’.

Even though it’s early on in the game for Deft, i’m going to put it out there and say that this brand will be the catalyst for change in the MX industry, hopefully it can inspire some other people in to being original – An idea  that has been long forgotten by most, or so it seems.

How would you describe Deft?

Something Fresh, something new, bright and funky, and we’re always having fun with it!

Where do you want to take Deft and where do you see it going?

We just want to build a dope crew of guys and slowly build the brand, we don’t really know where its going to go but people seem to dig it so far so we will have to wait and see where it takes us.

Did any of you have any previous design experience before you began?

It’s something that I always did in my spare time when I was racing, and one day I just realized that I could make it my job!

What lead you in to creating Deft?

We wanted something to call our own, we have a big crew of guys who like gloves and like them a certain way so we made them the way we wanted.

I know LD has been drawing/painting for some time, when did you fist discover your talent for art?

Since I was a little kid i’ve always been into it.

Your designs have a distinct Hip Hop and graff feel to them, is that something that you look toward for inspiration?

Yeah, it’s just what I grew up doing and all the artists that I follow are graff artists turned designers so naturally its gonna look like that, but if it looks like that then that’s cool cause that’s the look i’m going for!

Speaking of Hip Hop, I guess since OTP 5 came out everyone is now aware that Nate can throw down on the mic as well as the bike, what’s been happening with that and when are we going to hear more?

Yeah for sure, Nate has been rapping for a while now and he’s getting really good at it! He actually was the opening act at the Transworld awards in Vegas and really impressed a lot of people!

I see on your site you have made a few tee’s as well as gloves, will you be bringing out a full line of soft goods?

I’m sure eventually we will want to have a full line of soft goods but for now were just concentrating on the gloves….. we have a few tee designs but our main focus for now is the gloves.

Deft is something so fresh and different in the FMX community in particular, how is it being received so far?

So far it’s been received really well I think,  a lot of people are liking a little change in the motocross industry,  a lot of companies in motocross are very simple and straight forward, which is fine if that’s the look you are going for but that’s not for us.

What are you doing when you’re not riding or working on Deft?

Going golfing

How do you see the state of FMX today, and where do you see it going?

I see it at kind of a stand still right now, there’s not many contests going on and the demos are pretty limited.  A lot of it could be the economy,  I think it will pick back up in the next year or so.

Favourite place to kick it?

On the couch watching football.

What’s in your pockets right now?

Chapstick.

Advice to the groms looking to come up in the MX world?

Practice as much as possible, and just try your absolute best every time you’re at a race/event, or even just practicing because time goes by fast and if you don’t try your best when you have the chance it will all be over soon.

Props to Deft Family and Tedesco Photo for the pics.
